On March 11, 1955, the third of thirteen X-10s, an unmanned technology demonstrator built by North American Aviation, exploded seconds after takeoff when the landing gear was raised. An investigation determined that the destruct package was wired to the landing gear circuit rather than the engine circuit. Oops.

On the U-2, I'm told, a small panel in the cockpit that requires you to lift a flap and then depress two buttons at the same time. It is set to a timer.

but really
The Bell X-1 was built before the era of 'area ruling' aircraft. they chose the 50 caliber body shape because they knew it was inherently stable during supersonic flight. which was the real purpose of the X-1 (developing stability and control for trans-sonic and supersonic flight regimes).
